Materials and craftsmanship

Every piece is shaped over a lightweight sculptural core and finished by hand with multiple layers of mineral plaster, giving a dense, matte, stone-like surface. Mineral pigments, limewash tones and protective finishes are applied by hand according to the selected surface treatment. Tones sit in the ivory, bone and warm sand family and soften beautifully in natural light.

Care

Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid prolonged direct water contact unless your piece was sealed for sheltered outdoor use — if in doubt, write to us; a real person from the atelier answers.

Production and delivery

Every piece is handcrafted to order in our atelier. Production typically takes 5–10 business days unless this page states otherwise; custom sizes and more complex forms may require additional time.

Your piece leaves the atelier as soon as it is finished. Delivery timing and full terms are set out in the section below.

Shipping, duties and returns

Insured door-to-door delivery is included in the displayed price unless a product page or checkout explicitly states otherwise. Once dispatched, transit typically takes approximately 3–10 business days depending on destination and service; carrier or customs delays can occur. For orders delivered within the United States, applicable customs duties and import charges are covered by Mono Aurel. For deliveries to all other countries, customs duties, import taxes and related destination charges are the buyer's responsibility. Any applicable sales taxes will be displayed at checkout where required. Every shipment is tracked and insured.

Each piece is cushioned and double-boxed like artwork, and you receive tracking as soon as it leaves the atelier.

We share production photos and videos at important stages, and send a detailed final video before dispatch. Your piece is shipped only after you have reviewed and approved it. If you are not satisfied before shipment, we will remake the piece or refund you. Because pieces are made to order, standard change-of-mind returns are not accepted once a piece has been approved and dispatched. Every product is covered by a one-year warranty: in the case of a verified manufacturing defect, product fault or qualifying transit damage, we will provide a refund or a replacement, and in most cases you will not be asked to return the original piece. The warranty does not cover misuse, improper installation, accidental damage or ordinary wear.

About this piece

A monumental architectural floor sculpture defined by organic openings, sculpted negative space and a tactile, hand-finished mineral surface.

Portal Totem No.102 brings together primitive geometry and contemporary restraint. Each piece is individually formed and finished by hand in the Mono Aurel atelier, creating a sculptural presence that feels simultaneously ancient, architectural and quietly modern.

Available in 160 cm / 63 in and 180 cm / 70.8 in heights.

Portal Totem No.102

Portal Totem No.102 is a tall, monolithic floor sculpture composed of interconnected geometric volumes and organically rounded openings.

Its architectural silhouette is balanced by softened corners, irregular hand-shaped details and a deeply tactile mineral surface. The open sections allow light, shadow and the surrounding interior to become part of the sculpture, causing its appearance to shift throughout the day.

Inspired by ancient monoliths, carved stone portals and modernist sculpture, the piece is designed to create a strong vertical focal point without overwhelming its surroundings. It works particularly well in large living rooms, entrance halls, stairwells, hotel interiors, galleries and contemporary architectural spaces.

Although the sculpture has the visual presence of carved stone, each piece is shaped over a lightweight sculptural core and finished by hand with multiple mineral plaster layers to create its distinctive stone-like surface. This makes it easier to position than a comparable solid-stone object while preserving a substantial architectural appearance.

Materials and Construction

  • Engineered lightweight sculptural core
  • Multiple layers of hand-applied mineral plaster
  • Reinforced structural construction
  • Hand-shaped edges and openings
  • Matte stone-effect surface
  • Optional protective topcoat for exterior use

The sculpture is not made from solid natural stone. Its stone-like appearance is created entirely by hand using layered mineral materials. Mineral pigments, limewash tones and protective finishes are applied by hand according to the selected surface treatment.

Standard Finish — Weathered Limestone

The standard finish shown in the photographs is a warm, neutral weathered-limestone tone with subtle beige, taupe and mineral-grey variation. The finish includes soft tonal movement, slightly deeper tones inside the openings, visible hand-applied texture, a matte mineral appearance, naturally irregular tool marks, and gentle variation between raised and recessed areas.

Because every finish is applied manually, no two sculptures will be completely identical.

Available Colour Options

  • Weathered Limestone
  • Ivory White
  • Natural Greige
  • Warm Taupe
  • Sand Beige
  • Grey Brown / Mushroom Brown
  • Charcoal Stone
  • Terra Cotta
  • Sage Green
  • Muted Olive
  • Custom colour

For custom colours, customers may provide a RAL colour code, a paint reference, an interior photograph, a stone or material reference, or a fabric or furniture colour reference. Custom pigmentation may involve an additional fee depending on the requested finish.

Indoor and Outdoor Use

Portal Totem No.102 is primarily designed as an indoor sculptural object.

For outdoor placement, an exterior protective coating can be added upon request. This treatment improves resistance to moisture and normal weather exposure, although the sculpture should still be positioned in a stable location and protected from prolonged standing water, severe impact and extreme weather conditions.

For exposed or windy outdoor installations, we can also discuss a concealed anchoring solution before production. Please select or request the outdoor finish before production begins.

Production Process

Each sculpture is made individually to order. The production process includes preparing the structural sculptural form, reinforcing the body and architectural openings, applying multiple mineral plaster layers, hand-shaping the surface and edges, applying the selected pigmentation, creating the final stone-effect finish, quality inspection, customer approval photographs and videos, and protective packaging and dispatch.

Handmade Character

Each Portal Totem is individually formed and finished by hand. As a result, the sculpture may include subtle variations such as irregular mineral texture, slight dimensional differences, hand-shaped openings, visible application marks, tonal movement, minor asymmetry and variations in the depth of pigmentation. These characteristics are intentional, are expected rather than defects, and distinguish the sculpture from a factory-moulded or mass-produced object.

Placement Recommendations

Portal Totem No.102 works especially well in entrance halls, living rooms, double-height interiors, stairwells, contemporary villas, interior-design projects, boutique hotels, restaurants, galleries, architectural offices, reception areas and large niches or alcoves.

Allowing open space around the sculpture will help the negative spaces and architectural silhouette remain visually clear. Directional lighting can be used to create stronger shadows through the openings and emphasise the hand-finished surface.

Care Instructions

For indoor sculptures: dust gently with a clean, dry microfibre cloth, use a soft brush for recessed areas, do not use abrasive cleaning products, do not apply bleach, solvents or chemical sprays, avoid prolonged direct contact with water, do not drag the sculpture across the floor, and lift from the lower structural body when repositioning.

For outdoor sculptures: clean only with a soft damp cloth, do not use a pressure washer, avoid standing water around the base, inspect the protective coating periodically, and move the sculpture indoors during extreme weather when possible.

Custom Orders

Custom dimensions, colours and surface treatments may be available. For architectural projects we can also assist with size adaptation, alcove compatibility, narrower proportions, custom colour matching, outdoor protection, concealed floor anchoring, coordinated sculpture pairs, and residential or commercial project orders.

Request a custom version with the required dimensions and placement photographs before ordering a customised piece.

Living with the Portal Totem No.102 – Handcrafted Architectural Floor Sculpture

Material story

Each piece is shaped over a lightweight sculptural core and finished by hand with multiple mineral plaster layers to create its distinctive stone-like surface — applied, dried and carved back until it reads like weathered stone. Mineral pigments, limewash tones and protective finishes are applied by hand according to the selected surface treatment.

Surface character

Run a hand across the surface and you will find gentle tool marks, grain and subtle shifts in tone. This variation is not a defect — it is the record of the making, and the reason no two pieces are ever identical.

How it is made

Concept, carving, reinforcement, plaster, hand sanding, pigmentation, inspection — every piece passes through the same slow sequence of hands before it is packed, one piece at a time. See Our Materials and Process.

Placement & scale

Sculptural objects work best where they can breathe — a quiet corner, an entryway, the end of a hallway, a console styled sparsely. The lightweight sculptural core keeps large architectural forms manageable to position and to move. Give the piece space and side light; plaster texture comes alive in raking light. Exact dimensions are listed above, and a written spec sheet is available on request.

Long-term care

Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid soaking, harsh cleaners and abrasives. Treated kindly, mineral plaster ages the way good architecture does — slowly, and with character. Read the Care Guidance.
